The exam-cycle change has defined conditions

Federal banking regulators announced an interim final rule on September 10, 2026, expanding eligibility for an eighteen-month on-site examination cycle. The release states that the relevant asset threshold rises from $3 billion to $6 billion for qualifying institutions.

Eligibility still depends on conditions such as being well managed and well capitalized. The release also says offsite monitoring continues. An extended exam cycle does not mean supervision disappears, and it does not require a bank to approve a business loan.

Why borrowers should avoid a shortcut inference

Our interpretation for owners is straightforward: a change in a lender's regulatory timetable is not a change in your company's repayment capacity. A smaller bank may know a local market, but that does not settle the requirements for a particular project or guarantee a faster decision.

Ask the provider to explain the underwriting steps for the requested product. Confirm which financial periods are needed, whether the purchase requires additional review and what conditions must be resolved before closing. Use the answers to plan a realistic project calendar.

Prepare for a relationship conversation

Bring a clear description of the business, the financing purpose and the source of repayment. A local contact can understand a well-supported cash cycle more readily than a request built around a rounded headline amount. Show existing debts and contingent commitments that could affect the payment budget.

If a property or equipment purchase is involved, separate the deposit, installation and reserve needs. A delay can leave the business paying expenses before the asset becomes productive. Test that gap using the same written terms supplied by the prospective lender.

Compare the actual proposal

Review usable proceeds, required payments, fees, collateral and guarantees. Ask how early repayment works and which terms could change before funding. A friendly relationship should make those questions easier to answer, not replace the written comparison.

The application checklist and loan-selection guide below provide a structure for that work. The original joint release identifies the scope of the exam-cycle change. This briefing does not rank community banks, claim an institution qualifies for the longer cycle, or establish that a particular borrower will obtain financing.
