A new survey of family finances

The Federal Reserve released its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances on October 9, 2026. The announcement reports a 7 percent rise in real median family income between the 2022 and 2025 surveys, to $82,200, and a 2 percent increase in real median net worth, to $215,900.

It also reports that the share of families with debt payments exceeding 40 percent of income rose from 6.5 to 8.6 percent. These measures describe families, not business borrowers. Median net worth is not cash available to a company or evidence that its owner can accept a guarantee.

Keep personal and business liquidity separate

Our interpretation for entrepreneurs is to prepare two distinct cash plans when considering owner capital. The operating forecast describes business collections and payments. The household reserve plan describes the owner's actual available liquidity and obligations.

An asset with a high estimated value may be difficult to convert to cash when the business needs it. Do not present a retirement balance or property value as an available operating reserve without considering restrictions, timing and the owner's other commitments with qualified advisers.

Review the guarantee before the headline amount

A financing request can create personal obligations as well as a business payment. Read the guarantee language and ask who must sign, which assets are implicated and how obligations are affected by an ownership change. The provider's documents establish those conditions, not a survey average.

This briefing does not recommend drawing on personal savings or retirement accounts. It suggests recording the tradeoff explicitly rather than assuming the household can cover an operating shortfall. A downside case should remain workable without an undefined promise of additional owner cash.

Bring the records that explain the decision

Prepare the business's existing debt schedule, current cash position and proposed use of funds. If owner contributions are part of the plan, document the amount and availability while retaining a household cushion appropriate to the owner's circumstances.

The financing checklist and loan-selection guide below help organize the request. The survey supplies useful economic context, but its national measures cannot determine the safe contribution or financing amount for an individual household or company. Review actual terms and personal obligations before accepting an agreement.
