A slower national payroll picture

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' October 2 release reports that September 2026 nonfarm payroll employment changed little, rising by 29,000. It also revised the combined July and August gains down by 60,000. Average hourly earnings for private nonfarm employees were up 3.0 percent over the year.

These are national labour-market observations. They are not a count of small-business hiring in an individual city, and the payroll estimate is subject to revision. A local company's sales or wage budget should not be substituted with the national headline.

Use your own payroll commitments

Our interpretation for financing preparation is to separate headcount, paid hours and cash payroll. A new role can create costs before the employee contributes collected revenue. Include employer taxes, benefits, training and the time needed to become productive in the operating budget.

When an equipment purchase is intended to support a new hire, model the equipment and staffing schedules together. If installation slips, the business may still incur wages or lose an expected production window. A payment example does not capture that timing without additional assumptions.

Test collections alongside hiring

Use actual customer payment history when deciding whether the business can carry an additional fixed obligation. National employment conditions may provide context for a downside scenario, but they do not identify which customer will pay late or whether a position can be filled on the planned date.

Change one assumption at a time before testing a combined downside case. For example, move the first collected payment later, then add a higher staffing cost. Record the lowest projected cash balance and identify which purchases could be staged if the cushion becomes inadequate.

Keep the financing request reviewable

Bring recent payroll records, a hiring plan and the sources-and-uses budget to the lender conversation. Explain which costs are recurring and which are part of the initial investment. A forecast supported by the company's records is easier to challenge and improve than an optimistic narrative.

The cash-flow forecast and debt-service guides below help translate that plan into payment assumptions. The BLS release supplies the national event record. Neither the report nor this briefing predicts a business's hiring outcome, local demand or ability to qualify for financing.
