Use the evidence and practical questions in this article to test your own assumptions. Any worked examples use hypothetical inputs.
Separate the different charges
Cruise gratuities may include a daily amount applied to an onboard account, charges attached to particular purchases and voluntary extra tips. The exact policy depends on the line, booking market, fare and cabin category. Royal Caribbean currently describes automatically applied daily gratuities that guests may adjust or remove under its stated process. Do not turn one operator’s policy into a universal rule, or assume a prepaid drinks package covers every daily gratuity.
Build a per-person budget
Use the amount in your booking terms rather than an old forum post. As a hypothetical example, $20 per guest per day for two guests over seven days produces $280. That is a calculation example, not a quoted fare or a claim that children are treated identically by every operator. Add separately any purchase-linked service charges, optional extra tips and shore spending. Compare package offers using what is genuinely included for your party.
Check prepaid and onboard records
If you prepay, retain the confirmation and check the onboard account for how that payment appears. For restaurant, beverage or spa purchases, read the receipt before adding an extra amount. An additional tip line does not by itself tell you whether a service charge is already present. If something looks duplicated, ask Guest Services to explain the specific line item while the trip is underway. Keep the answer with your final account statement.
Resolve questions before disembarkation
Ask about adjustment procedures, deadlines and how a prepaid amount is handled under your particular booking. Avoid waiting until transport to the airport is already due. A group organizer should circulate the budget in advance so passengers understand what may be billed to individual accounts. Keep exchange-rate and payment-card considerations separate from the ship’s charge itself. Clear records help you assess the total trip cost without mislabeling every onboard expense as an unavoidable gratuity.
